Another week has gone by and we have already completed some of our interviews! We visited Murà Masseria, where we learned what makes Altamura’s bread so special and even tried it (it was delicious). After that we went to Masseria Scalera which is run by Maria Antoinetta, who showed us around, told us about the process of cheese making, and took us with her to herd the sheep.
Then we spent another two days at Masseria la Fiorita where we helped Marialaura make jam, clean and repaint some spaces, and restore a bug hotel. We also heard the history of the place and learned about self-sufficient biological gardening which works in a fully closed cycle. It was incredible to be welcomed into the very first organic farm in the Puglia-Basilicata region. Here, long before “organic” became a label, it was philosophy. The founder, now in his later years, shared stories of the dogged determination which was now made the farm both a social and ecological hub.
We enjoyed a lot our time in these places: spending time with animals, getting to know the difficulties of working in a farm, learning how to make bread… And being there and seeing the passion and effort put in these places made us value even more their work. We hope we were able to capture all of this in our interviews, where each of them shared their love and experience with us, and we are so excited for the ones that are yet to come!
It was also rewarding to get to use the skills we learned in previous workshops, like flying the drone with Dario or trying different angles with the cameras!
But apart from the hard work (😉), another important part of our experience as volunteers is our leisure time. This week we visited Poligniano a Mare. There we walked around, went to the beach, and even got to see a Cliff Diving contest.
We are very excited for what’s to come next week, but before that we are actually going to Naples, so stay tuned for our next update yayyy!!!!!!
